Wrapped in a textured white swaddle and wearing a delicate headband with pretty peach flowers, Petra sleeps serenely as Mom leans down to give her a loving kiss on the cheek. In a solid light blue shirt, Dad sticks to the neutral theme of the session and lets his adorable baby girl take center stage in her white swaddle and floral headband. I love this photo because the angle perfectly shows off just how tiny little Petra is as she lays snugly in her daddy’s strong hands!

Petra’s mom and dad radiated joy and pride as they held their tiny daughter, and it was so much fun to capture the love and tenderness that shone on their faces. The bond they already share with their newborn baby girl is easy to see in the gentle way they hold her, and their happiness shows as they beam smiles toward the camera.

What a wonderful keepsake portrait to display in their home or in the nursery to remember those very early days when their little girl was so tiny.

NEWBORN BABY PORTRAITS…THE MAGIC IS IN THE DETAILS

In newborn photography, every small detail is part of the story that’s being told. In the photo below, Petra sleeps soundly on a tiny brass baby bed, still swaddled in a textured wrap. For this portrait, I used layers and textures to create lots of visual interest. The tiny pillow, stacked on top of a blanket is as pretty as can be—and all of this rests against a pink and white background with flowers fading in bokeh style to make Petra the focal point.

Every detail that is captured in newborn portraits is intentionally chosen so that no matter how fast little Petra may grow, Mom and Dad can always look back and remember those soft, sweet days of brand-new baby moments.

A SWEET AND SLEEPY SMILE

Is there anything that will melt your heart faster than a baby’s smile?

Capturing a newborn smile on camera is a moment to be celebrated, because it’s about as rare as seeing a unicorn in the wild! It’s true, most newborns spend all—or a majority of their session—sleeping, so when I can capture a smile, I’ll take it. Whether it’s a wide-awake grin or a dreamy giggle, it’s a golden moment, and it’s definitely one I want to make sure is part of your portrait collection.

Below, Petra dreams of sweet lullabies, stuffies, and snuggles with mom and dad as she lays on a comfy layered nest of blankets. I added a little pop of color with pink and sage green for this portrait, allowing for more visual layers and texture. This soft little blanket pile rests on a plush and furry white throw that is very versatile and comfortable, allowing for lots of safe and creative posing and prop changes.

And of course, I couldn’t leave out the pretty floral headband! This one has large peach and white blooms for a pretty girly style. And don’t worry…if you’re planning your own baby photo session at the Andrea Sollenberger Studio, I have an entire wardrobe of baby girl headbands—as well as a wardrobe of swaddles, pregnancy gowns, and props for baby, too! Every client has access to all studio props and outfits for their session planning, so you can get as creative as your heart desires.

Approximately 25% of a baby’s weight is in its head! Yep, it’s true. And that’s one of the reasons you should always hire a professional photographer to take your baby’s photos. They will be aware of safety precautions they need to take.

CHOOSE COLORS AND PROPS YOU LOVE FOR YOUR NEWBORN PHOTO SESSION

The color palette for Petra’s session was filled with on-trend neutrals with pops of peach and sage.  I used props like flowers, blankets, and miniature baby beds accented with accessories like floral headbands to add a feminine touch to Petra’s portraits. When you plan your professional newborn portrait session, be sure to keep your personal style, decorating taste, and sharing/gifting needs in mind, as those will guide many of your session decisions.

Petra is a vision in creamy white in the portrait below. With monochromatic layers in white, it was important to add in textures and layers to ensure that every detail of the photo would pop. The soft layers look cozy and comfy, and I love how the lacy layer of the hat she’s wearing frames her little face to show off all the perfect details like her little button nose and her perfect round cheeks.

TIMELESS MEMORIES…THE SWEETEST SLUMBER

There is something that’s just so peaceful about watching a newborn sleep. Their blissful slumber and delicate expressions are heartwarming, and capturing moments like these on camera is a way of remembering these sweet moments—even as the days and years fly by.

In this close-up of little Petra as she sleeps, it’s so sweet to see her tiny hands tucked beneath her cheek as she rests on her side. Wearing a delicate headband with the tiniest of white pearls, she shows off a head full of dark hair and a tiny ear, along with round cheeks and fluttery, dreamy lashes. Who wouldn’t swoon just looking at this adorable baby girl?

My goal is always to create a warm, cozy, and comfortable environment for my tiniest clients. And it seemed like Petra was completely at ease, because she slept her way through the entire session—a win in my book!

In the photo below, we see all of Petra as she lays on her tummy with a blanket trailing behind her (and modestly covering her baby bum). An adorable modern take on the naked baby portrait, this is a cute way to show off baby’s cute wrinkles and rolls!

COZY LAYERS FOR NEWBORN COMFORT AND ADORABLE PHOTO STYLING

Creating a cozy and comfortable environment for newborns is essential when it comes to capturing the warmest and most heart-melting pictures. During Petra’s session, I used a variety of soft and fluffy blankets, throws and wraps that coordinated perfectly with props like the tiny baby bed below. Layers not only add lovely dimension and texture to the photo, they create a soft little nest for Petra—and especially for newborns, this is a great way to change up styling without having to actually change baby’s outfits.

Laying on her tummy and sound asleep, Petra lets one tiny leg dangle off the bed to show off the tiniest, most delicate little foot and toes, along with a few adorable wrinkles on her tummy and arm. Her little cheeks are accented by the floral headband she’s wearing for an overall pretty-as-a-picture look of cozy baby comfort.
